Clarice Cliff was an extraordinary woman. Her striking, colourful and innovative designs have made her a household name and in May 2003 one of her most famous pieces was sold at Christie’s for almost forty thousand pounds. Her vibrant and joyful designs represented the new modern spirit of the 1930’s for women and the play charts her rise from humble working-class beginnings to art director of a famous commercial firm. In public she was described as one of the romances of the pottery trade, but her private life concealed a heart wrenching secret which could have ruined her.

The Lyceum Theatre in 1890s London. Actor Manager Henry Irving is doing everything he can to keep his theatre up and running performing only the classics, and keep his star actress, the famous Ellen Terry, from leaving for good. (Local history buffs will know she was briefly married to GF Watts.)  Will she be lured away by the new scripts of Ibsen (touted by the influential Bernard Shaw) and seek new roles elsewhere? And behind the scenes is the costume designer, Alice Comyns Carr, attempting to create that famous beetle-wing dress for Lady Macbeth, and the young actor Sedgwick who tries too hard to get it right. It's all 'rotten perfect' in this delightful new script regarding the famous theatrical partnership during a time of great change in the London theatres.

Led by award winning author, Bethan Roberts, this workshop will explore how to use research to kick-start and guide your creativity.

How can we use historical research to create fictional stories? We will consider what research for creative writers can be, and look at different ways to go about it. The emphasis will be on the joy involved in delving deeper into something that fascinates you.

Through writing exercises you will practice turning the stuff of research into the stuff of story, considering how letters, objects, and images can be transformed into fiction. You will hone your skills of selection, thinking about which parts of your research to put into a story, and which to leave out. Your tutor will provide research materials.

We will also consider the responsibilities of the writer who uses real lives, and the pitfalls of using research in fiction.

Abouth Bethan Roberts:

Bethan Roberts has published five novels and writes stories and drama for BBC Radio 4. Her books include The Good Plain Cook (Serpent’s Tail, 2008), which was a Radio 4 Book at Bedtime; My Policeman (Chatto & Windus, 2012), the story of a 1950s policeman, his wife, and his male lover (now an Amazon Original movie); and Mother Island (Chatto, 2014), which received a Jerwood Fiction Uncovered prize. Her latest novel, Graceland, tells the story of Elvis Presley and his mother, Gladys. Bethan has taught Creative Writing at Chichester University and Goldsmiths College, London. She lives in Brighton with her family.

Join us for a relaxing day learning linocut printmaking techniques using colour based washes, looking for inspiration in our summer exhibition Peggy Guggenheim: Petersfield to Palazzo.

Workshop Details:

Led by artist Richenda Court A.R.E., the morning session will focus on generating ideas and exploring featured artworks in the exhibition for inspiration. Time will be dedicated to observing and sketching the works for reference.

A demonstration for linocut materials and techniques will cover basics of this artform. Prints will be made on A5 size linocut with coloured washes.

The afternoon session will be dedicated to transferring the drawings onto the lino, cutting and printing using coloured washes in the background.

Other Information:

  • If you have them, please bring along drawing materials, sketchbooks or any ideas which may feel suitable.
  • Beginners and more experienced artists are very welcome.
  • All materials are included.

About Richenda Court:

Richenda trained in fine art and contemporary dance at Brighton University, Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance and Morley College.

Richenda is a full-time printmaker. Her prints are inspired by fluid detailed line drawings; progressing subconscious idea’s not knowing where they may lead. This process is the foundation of her practice.

In 2021 Richenda was made an associate member of the Royal Society of Painters and Printmakers and this summer elected to the Council. Her work can be found in the Ashmolean Museum, V & A Museum and British Library. Richenda has exhibited extensively in the UK including Bankside Gallery, the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition and the Royal Society of British Artists at the Mall Galleries.

Richenda has taught printmaking for over twenty years and is a Printmaking Lecturer at Morley College, London. Richenda has also lead workshops at Bankside Gallery, The Lightbox Woking, Preston Manor High School, Westminster School, Hammersmith and Ochre Print Studio, Guildford.

‘Lost in the vastness of the sky, I have only myself to confront.’

A fascinating play about the enigmatic 1930’s aviator Amelia Earhart. As well as record-breaking flights – including the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic – she was a pioneering role model. But who was the woman behind the myth?

‘I discovered a means for pulling together all the parts of myself: the scientist, the artist, the adventurer. Flying meant not only freedom, but bringing myself....TO myself.’

Threads of her life from childhood onwards unravel before us, peppered with songs of the period by The Boswell Sisters. Glimpsing the events and relationships that formed her, often in her own words, we watch how her love of flying and adventure grows to the point where she takes off and doesn't look back.
