27 Feb: An Audience with Edward Thomas
Join Edward Thomas in the ‘Bee Hive’ as he tells of his friendships with Robert Frost, the American poet, and Eleanor Farjeon, the poet and writer of children’s books; his involvement with the Dymock poets; his wife Helen and their three children; his transition from a writer of prose to a writer of poetry; and finally his untimely death in France in 1917.
Jonathan Jones took early retirement in 2010 and has since become a much sought after public speaker/performer, having now delivered well over a 1,000 talks/performances, mainly on literary themes.
He will be appearing at the BilliLit Festival, Billingshurst, West Sussex, in a performance of ‘An Audience with Rudyard Kipling’ and at the Farnham Literary Festival where he will be delivering two of Charles Dicken’s public readings, ‘Sikes & Nancy’ and ‘Doctor Marigold’, and where last year he performed ‘An Audience with C S Lewis’.
His involvement with Edward Thomas sprung from the monthly war poetry readings which he delivered at the National Trust’s Sandham Memorial Chapel for many years, and in which he included many of Thomas’s war poems. He has also given several talks/readings at the Church of St James, Eastbury, where there is a stained glass window by Laurence Whistler and which is dedicated to Edward and Helen Thomas.
Doors/Bar Opens: 6.30pm
Performance starts: 7pm
Duration: c. 60mins (no interval)
